How to Play Powerball: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Powerball is one of the most popular and widely played lottery games in the United States. With drawings three times a week and jackpots that regularly climb into the hundreds of millions, it captures the imagination of players across the country. If you have never played before, the process might seem confusing at first, but it is actually quite straightforward. This guide walks you through every step, from purchasing your first ticket to claiming a potential prize.
What Is Powerball?
Powerball is a multi-state lottery game coordinated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). It is available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game was first introduced in 1992 and has since become one of the largest lottery games in the world, producing some of the biggest jackpots in history.
The game uses a dual-drum system: one drum contains 69 white balls, and a second drum contains 26 red balls (the Powerball). Players select five numbers from the white ball pool and one number from the Powerball pool to create their combination.
Step 1: Find an Authorized Retailer
Powerball tickets can only be purchased from authorized lottery retailers. These include convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, and other locations licensed by your state lottery commission. Look for the official Powerball or lottery logo displayed at the point of sale.
Some states now allow online ticket purchases through their official lottery websites or approved third-party apps. States that currently offer online Powerball sales include Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, among others. The availability of online sales changes periodically, so check your state lottery website for the most current information.
Step 2: Fill Out the Play Slip
At the retailer, you will find Powerball play slips near the lottery counter. Each play slip has several panels, and each panel represents one play (one set of numbers). Here is how to fill one out:
- Choose 5 white ball numbers from 1 to 69. Mark five different numbers on the upper portion of the panel.
- Choose 1 Powerball number from 1 to 26. Mark one number on the lower portion of the panel.
- Optional: Mark Quick Pick if you want the computer to randomly select your numbers for you.
You can fill out multiple panels on a single play slip to purchase several plays at once. Each play costs $2.
Tip: If you do not have specific numbers in mind, use our free number generator to get random, unbiased combinations before heading to the store.
Step 3: Add Power Play (Optional)
For an additional $1 per play, you can add the Power Play option. This multiplier can increase your non-jackpot winnings significantly:
- 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x multipliers are drawn randomly before each drawing
- 10x multiplier is available when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less
- The Match 5 prize ($1,000,000) is always doubled to $2,000,000 with Power Play, regardless of the multiplier drawn
- Power Play does not apply to the jackpot prize
Whether Power Play is worth it depends on your personal budget and risk tolerance. Mathematically, it improves the expected value of non-jackpot prizes, but it also increases your cost per play by 50%.
Step 4: Pay for Your Ticket
Hand the completed play slip to the retailer, along with your payment. The standard cost structure is:
- $2 per play (basic ticket)
- $3 per play (with Power Play)
The retailer will run your play slip through the lottery terminal, which prints an official ticket with your selected numbers, the drawing date, and a barcode for scanning. Always double-check the printed ticket to make sure it matches your intended selections before leaving the store.
Step 5: Keep Your Ticket Safe
Your printed ticket is the only proof of your purchase and your entry into the drawing. There are several important things to remember:
- Sign the back of your ticket immediately. An unsigned ticket can be claimed by anyone who possesses it.
- Store the ticket in a safe, dry place. Heat, moisture, and sunlight can damage the barcode and make the ticket unreadable.
- Consider taking a photo of both sides of the ticket with your phone as a backup record.
- Keep the ticket until you have confirmed whether it is a winner. Even small prizes require the original ticket for redemption.
Step 6: Watch the Drawing
Powerball drawings take place three times per week:
- Monday at 10:59 PM ET
- Wednesday at 10:59 PM ET
- Saturday at 10:59 PM ET
Drawings are broadcast on local television stations in participating states and streamed live on the official Powerball website. Results are also posted on the Powerball website, state lottery websites, and numerous lottery results apps shortly after the drawing concludes.
Step 7: Check Your Numbers
After the drawing, compare the numbers on your ticket to the winning numbers. Remember that the order of the five white balls does not matter, but your Powerball number must match the red Powerball drawn exactly. You can check your numbers through:
- The official Powerball website (powerball.com)
- Your state lottery's website or app
- Scanning your ticket at any authorized lottery retailer
- Calling your state lottery's phone hotline
Step 8: Claim Your Prize
If you have a winning ticket, the process for claiming your prize depends on the amount:
- Prizes up to $599: Can typically be claimed at any authorized lottery retailer.
- Prizes from $600 to $99,999: Must usually be claimed at a lottery district office or by mail. You will need to fill out a claim form and provide identification.
- Prizes of $100,000 or more: Must be claimed at your state lottery headquarters. For very large prizes, you should consult a financial advisor and an attorney before claiming.
Most states give winners 180 days to one year to claim their prizes, but deadlines vary by state. Never wait until the last minute to claim a winning ticket.
Important Rules to Remember
- You must be at least 18 years old to purchase a Powerball ticket (21 in some states).
- Tickets cannot be canceled once printed by the terminal.
- You can play Powerball in any participating state, regardless of where you live.
- Winnings from another state are subject to that state's income tax withholding rules in addition to your home state.
- Jackpot winners can choose between an annuity (30 graduated payments over 29 years) or a lump-sum cash payment.
Responsible Gaming
While playing the lottery can be an enjoyable form of entertainment, it is important to set limits and play responsibly. Here are some guidelines:
- Set a budget for lottery spending and stick to it. Never spend money that you need for essential expenses.
- Treat lottery tickets as entertainment, not as an investment or financial plan.
- Understand that the odds of winning the jackpot are extremely low (approximately 1 in 292 million).
- If you feel that your lottery spending is becoming a problem, contact the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-522-4700.
